The Otu Subakwa Igbo Nigeria initiative, has commended the Anambra State House of Assembly for passing a bill on reduction of wasteful spending during funerals.
The founder and National Chairman of the organization and a one-time Vice Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Pita Ejiofor, who gave the commendation in a statement, described the bill as commendable as it will go a long way in saving the people from
making unnecessary expenses in burying their dead ones.
Professor Ejiofor, recalled his input to the bill during its public hearing and commended the lawmakers for taking the bold step and urged them to also look into other wasteful spending being made by the people during marriage ceremonies.
He called on Ndigbo to always channel their resources into ventures that will be beneficial to the people in addition to reducing the unemployment rate in the society.
Professor Ejiofor a one-time Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning in the old Anambra State, commended the member for Anaocha Constituency One, Mr Charles Ezeani for initiating the Bill as well as the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly Mrs Rita Mmadugwu who during her tenure the bill was passed, which he noted will go a long way in safe guarding the rich Igbo cultural heritage.
