Enugwu-Ukwu community in Njikoka local government area has keyed into the State Government’s Programme of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra by launching their own brand captioned “Operation Clean and Healthy Enugw-Ukwu”.

The event held at the Civic centre of the community, attracted government functionaries, UNICEF and RUWASSA members among others.

The event which has its theme as “Environmental restoration of Enugw-Ukwu”, kick-started with picking of wastes from Enugw-Ukwu Civic centre down to Nkwo market of the town, and distribution of nose masks, safety boot, cellophane bags, and hand gloves.

While launching the operation keep Enugw-Ukwu clean, the Anambra State Deputy Governor, Doctor Nkem Okeke, represented by his Senior Special Assistant on General Duties, Dr. Charles Nwufoh, commended Ndị Enugw-Ukwu for being the first out of all the communities in the state to respond to the clarion call of Governor Willie Obiano in keeping a healthy environment.

On his part, the Commissioner for Environment, Architect Mike Okonkwo who reiterated the importance of keeping environment clean, equally lauded Governor Obiano for filling up five erosion sites in the town.

Architect Okonkwo, who urged them to always conduct compound sanitation, and dispose properly, further stressed that littering environments and improper disposal of wastes on land and drainage channels has some health implications and causes degradation.

In their separate speeches, the President General and former Vice President General of the town, Comrade Bonny Ọzọ Nkwuaku and Engineer Mike Dike, who noted that the community launched the project to commit them towards keeping a clean, healthy and green environment, disclosed that they had also set up task force to ensure total compliance.

The event witnessed inauguration of members of Enugw-Ukwu community Development Union National Board of Trustees and recognition of members as well as lecture by SOMTEC programme Officer from the Ministry of Information and Public enlightenment, Mrs. Chineze George-Ileka.
