World Intellectual Day is a day set aside by the World Intellectual Property Organisation, to create awareness on how patent, copyright, trademark and design impact on people daily and also to celebrate creativity.

Intellectual Property as identified by experts is simply ones right over his creative work, either in the sciences or the arts.

According to a German based Legislator and an Authorn, Honourable Eddy Duru, Intellectual Property in Nigeria and Africa does not hold much value, when compared to what is obtained in other parts of the world, notably Europe and America, as he said that an average Nigerian or Afrcan does not read nor appreciate literal materials and works.

He said that music seem to be the only creative work the youths get involved with, which according to him has devalued other aspects of intellectual property such as literature, which holds great treasure for readers.

On the protection of Intellectual Property, Honourable Duru said there are relevant laws which protect intellectual property in Nigeria as obtained all over the world, adding that the biggest couldn’t lies in the enforcement of such laws to protect owners of intellectual property and their work.

World Intellectual Day was first celebrated in the year 2000, through the instrumentality of the World Intellectual Property Organisation. This year’s theme is, “Reach for Gold”, Intellectual Property and Sports.
