The Anambra state government says it will implement the new minimum wage as soon as the federal to government releases guidelines for its implementation.
Governor Willie Obiano announced this at the 2019 Workers’ Day celebration at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.
According to the Governor, State government value it’s work force, and believe so much in them, but called on them to shun corruption as his government will not tolerate such practice in any form.
While asking the State workers for more dedication and commitment to duty, the Governor called for unalloyed loyalty.
While commending Governor Obiano for various labour friendly policies that make the State to rank among the best, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Jerry Nnubia, decried the rate of unemployment which is the bane of sustainable development.
As solutions, Comrade Nnubia suggested creation of more growth policies, increased energy supply, rehabilitation of the transportation sector, among others, appreciating the Governor for accepting to implement the new minimum wage policy.
He listed disparity in salary structures of state and local government workers, non implementation of 2017, 2018 promotion salary increase of promoted local government staff, among others as some of their challenges.
Speaking to the ABS, the Member representing Ihiala Two Constituency at the State Assembly, Honorable Pascal Agbodike pledged commitment of the State Assembly towards making laws that will make life better for Anambra workers.
In their separate reactions, the Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Venerable Amaechi Okwuosa, and a Community Leader Chief Dan Ogbuefi while commending Anambra workers, reminded them that to whom much is given, much is expected.

Workers’ Day was set aside to review workers’ successes, highlight their challenges with a view to addressing them.
Members of the State Executive Council , the Legislature, Judiciary, Traditional institutions, and the clergy, among others, attended the event.
The Theme for this year’s celebration is “Another one hundred Years of Struggle for jobs, dignity and social justice in Nigeria”.
