The Senior Special Assistant to the governor on labour, Comrade Goddy Ibekwe, says the decision by Governor Willie Obiano to wait for the National Income, Salaries and Wages Commission to release the guidelines for the new national minimum wage is the normal procedure and a welcome development.

Speaking on the heels of the 2019 May Day celebration in Awka, Comrade Ibekwe said it is only normal to use the guidelines as anything paid outside that is regarded as award.

He appreciated Governor Obiano whom he described as workers’ friendly, for his interest in workers welfare in the state.

On his part, the state chairman of Nigeria labour Congress, Comrade Jerry Nnubia while commending President Muhammadu Buhari for assenting to the bill on 18th April 2019, thanked Governor Obiano for accepting to pay any amount approved by the federal government even before it was approved.

He promised total dedication from workers, even as he appealed to the governor to look into the contributory pensions scheme.

Comrade Nnubia expressed the hope that other challenges facing the state workforce would soon be addressed.
