One hundred widows in the state have been empowered by the Women Advancement for Economic and Leadership Empowerment WAELE.

The empowerment which was held in Awka was a revolving loan of twenty thousand naira each for micro business so as to be gainfully employed and self dependent.

Speaking during the event, the founder of the group, Dr Otunba Basirat said they are a Non-Governmental Organization set up to bring women together, empower them economically, encourage and bring out the potential in them to achieve their God given talents.

Represented by the National Coordinator, Mrs. Ruth Agbooh, Dr Basirat stated that the empowerment exercise is simultaneously taking place in twelve states across the country aimed at marking their fifteenth anniversary and advised the widows to be focus, dedicated and determined so as to be a voice and authority in their places of business.

In an address of welcome, the state Coordinator of the Group , Princess Ngozi Ekwueme explained that the essence of the inauguration was to reawaken in women, the beautiful values of identity and cultural belonging, strengthen the sense of Africanism in them and build a generation of women who will be pro-active in the growth and development of cultural values and tenets especially with regards to the plight of women.

In their goodwill messages, a Professor of English with Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Igbariam, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh and Barrister Ndidi Akpati encouraged the windows to strive hard, embrace God and train their girl child to the envy of others.

In their separate speeches, two of the beneficiaries Mrs. Ngozi Enechukwu and Mrs. Evelyn Mgbemena on-behalf of others assured of judicious use of the money and its timely repayment.
