The Senate has passed a bill confirming June twelve as Democracy day. Known as Public Holiday Act amendment bill 2004, the bill seeks to make June twelve the new Democracy Day in Nigeria to replace twenty-ninth May, which marks the official handing over of military to civilian administration.

This follows its passage in the House of Representative last December, in honour of the late, Chief Moshood Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the annulled June twelve, 1993 Presidential election.

The Senate’s passage of the Public Holiday Act Amendment Bill, yesterday, which now finally confirms June twelve as Democracy Day, comes on the heels of an announcement by the federal government that inauguration day known as Democracy Day, has now been shifted to June twelve.

The bill is to be sent to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.
