Bangladesh has banned fishing off its coast for sixty-five days to boost its depleted fish stocks.

According to a report, coast guards commenced enforcement today while the ban covered all types of fishing vessels.

The ban, lasting from twentieth May until twenty-third July, is timed to occur with the breeding season.

While fishing associations called on the Prime Minister to re-consider the ban or pay them compensation, thousands of fishermen have planned protests, arguing that they will be left without a source of income.

There have been short-term bans on commercial fishing in the past but this is the first time that all fishing boats, including local fishermen, have been banned for a lengthy period.

However, Bangladesh is responsible for about sixty per cent of the total catch globally and the market for hilsa one of the species is worth more than two billion dollars.
