The Commissioner for Environment, Architect Mike Okonkwo has appealed to Ndi Anambra to imbibe the virtue of cleanliness.
Architect Okonkwo made the appeal during an ABS Television programme, “Good Morning Anambra”.
Explaining what the Ministry is doing to ensure a cleaner and healthy Anambra, Architect Okonkwo pointed out that they have done much in the areas of awareness creation and bagging of waste among others, appealing to residents of the state to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse, as government has provided strategic locations and waste bins for them to drop their wastes.
The Commissioner, who said that they will soon launch waste bins for segregation of wastes for easy collection, noted that the recent Memorandum of Understanding signed by the state government with a recycling firm is a step in the right direction.
He regretted that their greatest challenge is the people’s attitude towards waste disposal, and made it clear that they will continue to implement environmental laws to punish offenders, even as he affirmed that they are taking their sensitization to schools to catch pupils and students young as well as talking to Presidents General of communities for them to educate their people on the importance of cleanliness.
