State government has directed that henceforth, building plans for any structure above one-storey must be approved by the State Approval Committee of Anambra State Physical Planning Board.
This was part of decisions reached by the Board during its meeting in Awka as response to the challenge of building collapse in the State.
Speaking, the Chairman of the Board, Barrister Chike Maduekwe stressed that development plans for petrol stations and telecommunications masts will also get their approvals from the State Committee.
Individuals and organizations for one storey buildings and bungalows are to be approved by the Zonal Approval Committees of the Board.
According to Barrister Maduekwe, the two committees which will comprise members of all professional bodies involved in the Building industry, will ensure a phase by phase monitoring of the implementation of the building plans for the various categories of structures.
He explained that the measure was to rid the building industry of quacks whose activities is a major contributor to building collapse as well as to eliminate sharp practices by corrupt government officials.
Speaking earlier before the board meeting, the Commissioner for Lands, Chief Nnamdi Onwukwuba described building collapse at 22 Ezenwanne Street, Onitsha as an unfortunate incident.
The board rose from its meeting, and was led to the scene of the recent Onitsha building collapse where they sealed off the area.
According to Barrister Maduekwe, by sealing the area, the developer of the property will no longer have access to the property pending the outcome of the case in the court of law.
