Do you know that climate change affects food production, storage, nutrition and healthy living generally? Have you also paused to ponder the effect of climatic conditions on drug production and storage, as well as social well being, among others?
Yes! Experts at a One Day Media Round-table on Climate Change, Organized by the Center for Sustainable Development, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka in Collaboration with the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Nigeria, Anambra State Branch held at the University’s main auditorium said so.
Climate change is a significant change in global temperature, precipitation, wind patterns and other measures of climate that occur over several decades or longer.
According to a Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, who is equally the keynote speaker, Professor Ikenna Onyido, climate change is one of the most complex and urgent problems facing humanity, and if urgent drastic and pragmatic step to stop the menace is not taken, the problem will continue to linger for generations to come, as the havoc and damage already done by this change is alarming.
Professor Onyido noted that the Media round Table discussion focused on emphasis on helping policy makers to make and implement, as well as practice laws that will put a stop to climate change, regretting that the western world is not paying serious attention to the ugly trend.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment Architect, Mike Okonkwo explained that the Obiano administration has put policies in place to checkmate the adverse effect of climate change in the state and revealed that Governor Obiano went further to establish climate change desk in his office in order to ensure that the state is safe from dangers associated with climate change.
The Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Joseph Ahaneku represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Professor Carol Arinze-Umeobi said that all the activities leading to the production of excessive carbon dioxide must be checked and stopped to avoid imminent catastrophe.
The Director, Centre For Sustainable Development, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Felicia Anyogu in her welcome address, pointed out that the aim of the round-table is to brainstorm on a broad spectrum of climate change systems and environmental impact research issues and to foster cross displinary links, towards contributing to the attainment of a national environment that is free from climate change impacts in Nigeria.
The Anambra State Chairperson, International Federation of Women Lawyers, Miss Chinweze Obianyo gave goodwill message at the Round-table while Professor Stella Okunna spoke on the role of the mass media in combating climate change and a renowned Cardiologist, Professor Gladys Ahaneku talked about climate change on the health of the heart among other numerous speakers.
The one day media round-table on climate change has its theme as “Communicating Knowledge on Climate Change Information for Sustainable Decision Making in Nigeria”.
