Anambra State government has inaugurated a ten member panel of Inquiry on Collapsed building at no 38 Ogalaonye Street, Onitsha.

Governor Willie Obiano performed the inauguration during the State Executive Council Meeting at the Government House, Awka.

The Panel has the Traditional Ruler of Uke, Igwe Charles Agbala as its Chairman and Nwabufo Nwankwo as its Secretary and has a period of one month to submit their report to State government.

Other Members include, Assistant Commissioner of Police John Obuagbaka, representing the Commissioner of Police, Engineer Emeka Ezenwanne Commissioner for Housing, ExecItive Director of SEMA, CY Agupugo

Others are Engineer Alexander Chukwunwike representing Nigeria Society of Engineers, Engineer Adam Afugbuom representing Nigeria Institute of Builders, Alloy Uzor representing Nigeria Institute of Town Planners, Ebosie Ezeoke representing Material Testing Laboratory and SP Chinedum Aniagbaoso.

Inaugurating the panel, Governor Obiano charged them to bring their expertise to bear on the investigation to end spate of building collapse in the State.

He also asked them to investigate circumstances surrounding the collapse and make recommendations to government, adding that they have the mandate to identify buildings with similar challenge, that doesn’t meet standards to be pulled down.

Speaking earlier, the Secretary to the State government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu recalled that four lives were claimed, stressing that they also have approval to look at other perculiar cases.

Responding on behalf of the Panel, it’s Chairman, Igwe Agbala expressed gratitude to the State government for the confidence reposed on them, promising to execute the job with dignity and efficiency and expressed optimism that the outcome of their investigation will form a good base for government to formulate policies to checkmate the menace.

Recall that on May Twenty Second, a three storey building under construction collapsed, and trapped some workers under the debris.

According to police report, seven persons were rescued, out of which three persons were confirmed dead by a doctor, two persons treated and discharged, while two dead bodies were recovered at the scene.
