Media organizations have been asked to be promoters of peace and unity amongst their neighbours.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria Episcopal Chairman, Director of Communications and Auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha, Bishop Dennis Isizoh, made the call at a Holy Mass marking this year’s World Communication Day at Saint Gabriel’s Chaplaincy, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Abuja.
The World Communications Day which started in 1967 after the second Vatican Council, by Saint Pope Paul the Sixth is usually celebrated on the
seventh Sunday after Easter.
In a homily, Bishop Isizoh while dissecting the Pope’s message for the day, asked journalists and others who use the New Media to send messages to only disseminate messages that promote peace and unity.
He said before the advent of social media and internet, the church had always sought to promote peaceful interactions through its services.
Bishop Isizoh cautioned against using the social media for misinformation, creating false alarms, violence or injustice.
At a reception after the mass, the Director Social Communication, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Reverend Father Chris Anyanwu, thanked media practitioners for the work they are doing for the
church and charged them not to deviate from the teachings of Christ in the discharge of their duties.
Earlier in the week, the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja had organized a public lecture on the theme of this year’s celebration, “We are members one of another from network community to human Communities” where the keynote lecturer, Dr Jane Asagh, called for better human interaction rather than media interaction.
