The importance of a father cannot be over emphasized as he is the superhero in a family, who is always ready to take on everyday troubles of members of his family. Just like a Mother, a good father spends quality time with his family.
And so, to honour such fathers and to celebrate the paternal bonding, a special day is observed every year as Father’s Day to commemorate the efforts and contributions of fathers in the society.
Father’s Day celebration dates back to the time of middle ages when the celebration of fatherhood was done with a customary day that was observed on nineteenth March. The day was celebrated as the feast day of Saint Joseph, “the putative father of our Lord Jesus Christ”.
Father’s Day is celebrated to realize and honour the contributions of fathers in the society. It is also a day which celebrates the fatherhood, paternal bonds and the efforts of male parents towards their family and the wider society.
Primarily, the day is meant to recall, recognize and remember the endless efforts, initiatives and contributions of all the fathers around the world. No doubt, Father’s Day is an occasion to honour all the fatherly figures like stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles or even big brothers. The father is so important that Glory Naylor remarked: “Old as she was, she still missed her Daddy sometimes”.
On the other hand, George Herbert also said that “one father is more than a hundred school masters”, while Liam Nelson said that “it is an ongoing joy being a Dad”. Sidney politer had decided in his life that he would do nothing that did not reflect positively on his father’s life. All these go to show the importance of a father in both the family and the entire society.
It is like an eclipse to a family when their father dies. In short, throughout the mourning period, the survivours’ countenances bear looks of misery, hopelessness, sadness and disappointment. It is like the world has come to an end for the family. Some wives, who really love their husbands, rarely survive the rigours, pains and consequences of widowhood, as they remember their late soul mates in times of want and need.
Nobody can tell one that a father is in the family. He is the God they see in the house, their legitimate hopes, yearnings and aspirations. He is everything to the family, mostly, the breadwinner, who caters for the needs of the family. One can, therefore, realize his role and enviable position in the family.
Fathers are cherished and celebrated by their children at all times. The Ndigbo train their children in education or various trades as part of their onerous responsibilities.
So, as the world marks the International Father’s Day today, the society expects that fathers should sustain their commitment to their various families. Father plays a role in every child’s life that cannot be filled by any other.
As pillars in the development of a child’s emotional well-being, fathers should be affectionate and supportive to their children. They should use this occasion of the International Father’s Day to train their children in the fear of God, by setting the rules for their behavior and survival in the world. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY
