The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors is the umbrella professional association for all Surveyors in Nigeria. It encompasses all those in private practice, government, academia, companies, including oil and gas, etcetera
The Institution, through its members, provides remarkable surveying and mapping services for several organizations such as oil and gas, servicing companies, construction companies as well as Federal and state governments and parastatals.
Surveyors are critical stakeholders in physical planning. They provide accuracy in land space measurements, both in boundary matters and for investment purposes. They work for individuals, communities and institutions. They work in roads, utilities and landscaping, railways, canals, dams among numerous others.
By so doing, Surveyors add enormous value to peaceful co-existence as well as promoting socio-economic growth and development of nations. For instance, Surveyors are consulted in land disputes involving states, communities and individuals. They are also involved in the determination and facilitation of lands for development and legitimization as well as professional costing of construction issues.
As the bedrock of any meaningful development, surveying is vast. It covers Land Surveying; Engineering; Mining; Aerial photogrammetric and Remote Sensing; Hydrographic; Geodetic and Topographic Surveying. These are some of the reasons why humanity globally needs the services of Surveyors. Good enough, Governments, Educational Institutions and Practitioners are constantly advancing in the application of modern technology in service delivery. In furtherance of global best practices, the National body and indeed members of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors from all states of the federation are converging on Awka, the capital of Anambra State for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference of the Institution.
The programme started from the 17th to the 21st of June, 2019. However, this year, the Anambra State branch of the Institution is leveraging on the fact that the state is today, unarguably, the safest and most peaceful state in Nigeria, courtesy of Governor Willie Obiano’s Administration. This relief has led to apparent rise in the state’s investment profile and increasing response to the AKULUEUNO call by state government.
The Theme of the Conference is ‘National Mapping Infrastructure and Geospatial Technologies in Monitoring Disasters for Sustainable Development’. This theme is apt as it will provide ample opportunity for knowledge sharing on latest service delivery techniques and technological invasions in the Surveying Profession to the benefit of Nigerian Surveyors and other professionals in Environmental Management discipline.
To the benefit of Anambra, the hosting state, the over three thousand guests will be exposed to the enormous ecological disaster sites as well as the business and tourism potentials in the state. Since Anambra is one of the fastest growing states in integrated development in Nigeria, the conference delegates will sure join in the marketing of the unique socio-economic life in the state.
