Anambra State Government says it will support any idea or innovation that accelerates  the development of the state’s economy and infrastructure. 


The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C. Don Adinuba disclosed this when a group under the aegis of Onitsha City Marathon paid him a courtesy visit in his office at the Jerome Udorji Secretariat, Awka. 


The Onitsha City Marathon is a new sport proposal for the city of Onitsha that  us modelled towards   the Lagos Marathon, and the Okpekpe Marathon in Edo State.
Appreciating the idea of the Onitsha City Marathon, Mr. Adinuba said the project was a wonderful prospect that will bring a unique and contemporary pattern of life in the city and added that the Anambra State government is open to such creative  initiatives  that will expedite implementation of  its developmental master plan. 


The Commissioner also noted that hosting the sports festival in Onitsha was strategic given the historic and economic significance of the area, noting that the Anambra State Government is investing hugely in sports, and disclosed that  work will resume at the Awka City Stadium project. 


The leader of the Onitsha City Marathon, and Director General of Onitsha Business School, Professor Olusegun Shogbesan, who has lived in Anambra State for twenty-eight years, said that sports development in Anambra State was very imperative, noting that the marathon will boost the tourism sector, provide employment and promote basic athletics. 
Earlier, the group’s Media Head, Mr. Philip Balepo, said the Onitsha City Marathon which would be an annual sports event, was aimed at bringing a different method of doing things in the city, with athletes from outside of Nigeria being invited to compete in the tournament, adding that what the Anambra State Government has done with the Onitsha Marine Market will serve as a strong template for the kick off of the event.
