The Widows Forum of Nigeria and Diaspora Incorporation have staged an
awareness walk in commemoration of the 2019 International Widows Day .

The awareness walk  started at Paul University Awka and ended
at Eke Awka Round About.
They Widows placards  with inscriptions like ‘”widows are human
beings , stop maltreating them”, “love and appreciate a widow” “give
helping hand to a widow”, among others.

The widows came out in their numbers and  and
thank God who saw them throughout the year as they appear in their
uniforms.

Speaking to newsmen, the founder of the group, Barrister Chiago Jonny
-Obineme said that they embarked on the awareness  walk to re-echo  the campaign
that the fundamental rights of widows should be protected and  upheld as well as repeat the call  to stop
exposing widows  to obnoxious practices, dehumanization and
humiliation ,  stating that when a spouse dies, the wife should be
catered for and not punished.

She noted that those cultures that infringe on widows rights  should be
abolished even as she encouraged  widows  facing dehumanization to report
to them so that they will take the matter to court as they have legal
backing.

One of the members of the group, Dr Nneka Aniagor noted that they are
out to be heard as some people take advantage of widows by denying
them their rights,  stating that widowhood is not the end of the world
but another dimension in life,  advising widows to pray fervently and
nurture their children  to become useful citizens.

For Mrs. Amaka Umeh, widows should be supported by family members,
friends and relations and  frowned at some  widows who engage I irresponsible acts
because of   their  condition, urging them to engage themselves meaningful activities.

The group latter presented an award to a philanthropist Dr John
Obegolu of Obeledu whom they said has demonstrated humanity to widows
and the down trodden.
