The Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology, NIFST, has advocated the setting up of Anambra State Food Safety Commission to regulate the quality and processing of foods in the state.
The Institute made the call during a courtesy visit to the Managing
Director and Chief Executive Officer of the ABS, Chief Uche Nworah at
the station’s corporate headquarters in Awka.
Correspondent, Chibuzo Obidike reports that
the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology, NIFST, founded
in 1976, is a Non-Profit Making Body for Food Professionals drawn from
the Academia, Industry, Government and Research institutes in Nigeria.
The President of NIFST and chairman, Council of the Institute, Mr. Emmanuel Oluwole in his speech unveiled that the bill has been passed by the National Assembly for the body to oversee activities of professional food scientists and food safety in Nigeria and stressed the need for the state House
of Assembly to adopt it since agriculture remains the key developmental pillar in Anambra state.
Mr. Oluwole said that the visit was to intimate the South-East
and state residents of their up-coming annual conference with theme
“Traditional Food Processing” holding in Awka in September to ensure
nutritious food on the table.
Welcoming the delegation, Chief Nworah assured them that ABS will
always deploy it’s platforms in ensuring that all their lofty visions
come to fiction.
The ABS boss noted that their mission for the setting up of Anambra
State Food Safety Commission is paramount in tackling some of the
irrational fear in consuming locally made products.
In a vote of thanks, the Dean Faculty of Agriculture UNIZIK, Professor
Ernest Igwe and NIFST Chapter Chairman for East central, Professor
Gabriel Okafor affirmed that the Institute is committed to ensuring
food safety in the state and thanked the ABS for its support and
partnership.
