Anambra state has been rated first on an improved healthcare services in Nigeria.
The state received the ranking when a delegation of the European Union, EU, led by the Head of Health, Nutrition and Resilience Section, Montserrat Pantaleoni, paid a courtesy visit to the state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, at the Government House Awka.
Montserrat Pantaleoni said that the EU assistant to Nigeria is necessary as over three thousand persons die each year as a result of unavailability of vaccines for preventable ailments, expressing satisfaction with the supports of the Anambra state government to the organization.
Pantaleoni congratulated the Anambra state government on the universal health coverage and the health insurance scheme put in place to improve the health status of the residents, expressing hope that through such scheme the EU would reach its target of touching six million lives health wise.
On his part, the Health Adviser EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Anthony Ayeke maintained that the EU and the World Health Organization, WHO, are in the state to support government program, assuring that they will keep complementing the efforts of the Anambra state government on issues that have direct bearing on the people. Contributing, the Anambra state Coordinator, World Health Organization, Dr. Chukwumuanya Igboekwu pointed out that it was the reform mindedness of the Obiano led administration that attracted the interventions of the EU and WHO, and encouraged the government to keep the tempo.
Responding, Governor Obiano represented by his Deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke while describing health as one of the major needs of the people and thanked the EU for the various interventions it has made in the state, expressing hope that the state will keep benefiting from the organization especially in health related issues.
Governor Obiano explained that the Anambra state health insurance scheme was designed to tackle health challenges of the residents especially the less privileged in the society.
Speaking earlier, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpala explained that data generated from the EU scoping mission in the state in 2017 has helped the state to establish the health finance policy, and that through the data, the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency was able to develop the adoptive model of health insurance.
