The South East Governors’ Forum, met in Enugu yesterday where they took far reaching decisions on the security, agriculture and socio economic development of the geo political zone. In an eleven point communique after the meeting, the Forum agreed to key into the FG community policing programme by establishment of forest guards and clearing of bushy roadsides up to fifty metres inwards, in each state of the zone. According to the Forum, a committee as well as a centre for South East Integrated Security and Intelligence Gathering will be established and centrally located in Enugu, to address emerging security concerns.

The security committee will also ensure safety of fuel pipeline route to Enugu Depot, and see that pumping of petroleum products resumed at the depot soonest.

While restating its earlier rejection of the RUGA programme in any part of the zone, the governors resolved to put funds together from where interested people from South East can draw to engage in rice, and cassava farming, as well as cow rearing, poultry and fishery, among others.

The forum also called on the FG to fix the Akanu Ibiam International Airport run way, and the various roads in South East, while commending progress of work on the second Niger Bridge. They further called on FG to commence exploration of abundant oil and gas deposits in Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi states, just as it called on stake holders in the South East Development Commission to expedite action on it. The forum received various reports aimed at developing the zone, including the one headed by Prof Barth Nnaji on infrastructure development in South East, especially medical tourism.
