Anambra State government yesterday, Monday, July 29, 2019 began issuing abatement notices to environmental sanitation offenders in the state.

According to Mr Obi Nwankwo, the State Commissioner for Environment, this followed the expiration of the grace period which the Ministry also used to sensitize residents in the state on the importance of keeping their environment clean, while also drawing their attention to the state’s environmental laws, and the penalties for default.

Mr Nwankwo said: “We launched Dobe Anambra Ọcha, the environmental action campaign almost a month ago. We have been on several media platforms canvassing for our people to live clean and healthy lifestyles. We had roadshows in several towns in the 3 senatorial zones in the state preaching the same message. Now is the time for enforcement because the task of keeping our environment clean is not only a call to duty but one that concerns us all”.

Leader of one of the task force teams working in Awka and environs, Mr Francis Igwah said that there is no going back with the ongoing enforcement. “We have been warning people to clean up their environment, while some heeded and did the needful, some others were non-challant about this. Our men are going round the state now to enforce the sanitation laws. We are carrying out the mandate by His Excellency, Governor Willie Obiano to make Anambra one of the cleanest states in Nigeria”.

On his part, Mr Stanley Nkwoka, leader of one of the task force teams in Anambra South and North said people can still avoid the penalties by cutting grasses in their premises, desilting their drainage and ensuring that they bag all waste and dump same at designated places for evacuation.
