Compounds were submerged and properties worth millions of naira destroyed by flooding occasioned by heavy rainfall at Nzekwenze Street Umudioka – Awka, Awka-South Local Government Area.
The residents attributed the havoc to illegal structures built around drainage system.
Blessing Uchendu reports that when the ABS news crew arrived the flooded area, the havoc caused by the flood were still visible, as residents were seen scavenging for their properties from the destructive flood.
Engineer Desmond Oluka and Mrs. Chigozie Eze,who both
lost properties and structures to the flood, said that structures which were built close to drainage do not allow free flow of water, which comes with enormous force from other parts of the town , causing the flood to overflow into homes and other areas.
Other residents affected by the menace, including an ABS staff, Mr.
Ebuka Nwankwo, Miss Amaka Okoye and her mother Mrs. Caroline Okoye, lamented over the level of damage caused by the flood, and pleaded with government through relevant agencies to intervene and stop blockage of drainages in that area.
They equally pleaded for assistance to cushion the effect of damage caused by the flood.
