Lawyers have been  urged to always place the ethics of the profession above all material gains,  to maintain the place of
the legal institution in ensuring justice and peace in the society.

The call  was made during discussions and lectures  at  the European Union Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption, RoLAC Programme recently held in Awka.

The notion that lawyers are just after money appears to have permeated the minds of many and some unfortunate incidents in the legal profession might have given credence to such.

This may be part of the reasons why the EU-assisted Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption programme organized workshop  focused on lawyers in the state.

A resource person, Dr. Cephas Lerewolu,  said  that the essence of the workshop was to help lawyers reconnect with their core values at their various branches to promote access and administration of justice for the people.

Dr. Lerewolu pointed out that the programme was to help participants
go beyond the material dimension of their profession and focus more on seeking ways  to promote  justice where there are challenges for the people to maintain justice, law and order in the society.

In the same vein, Mr. Samson Onwusonye, who is the Coordinator of the
programme said they aimed at supporting the state Justice Sector reform by tackling notable challenges in the sector through making sure that ethics are enthroned in the profession.

A participant, Mrs. Juliet Amasiatu, who is the Director of Legal Services in the ABS, described the programme as a refreshing course as it availed them the opportunity to relearn the core values of the profession to function more and ensure the dispensation of justice always.

The programme featured group discussion and tasks.
