The Anambra State Welfare Association in Malaysia has decried increasing rate of exploitation and sex trafficking of girls and women from Anambra and South East.
They disclosed this during a media briefing held by the association in Awka.
The chairman Anambra State Welfare
Association Malaysia Mr Mmaduka Okwunwanne, said the association is
disturbed by the high rate of molestation of Anambra women and girls.
He said that they received over twenty cases weekly on how Igbo girls and women fall victims of commercial sex trafficking and decided to embark on a campaign against the disturbing practice . .
Mr Okwunwanne expressed their determination to put an end to the ugly
trend by taking the campaign to traditional rulers and town union
executives to monitor their children and wards pointing out that most of them do not know why they were being sponsored abroad.
The group called on the state government to help in nipping the challenge in the bud by increasing surveillance on human trafficking, urging all South East Governors to support the campaign to get to the grass root.
They also charged the media not to relent but to increase the tempo of creating awareness on the development .
While appreciating Governor Obiano for what he is doing in Anambra state, they also explained that they have severally rehabilitated some of the victims by either bringing them back home from Malaysia, or sending them back to school.
