It was a feeling of home coming at the palace of the traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu, as he received in audience the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Charles Esimone who called on him. Correspondent, Ngozi Obileri reports that Professor Esimone was at the visit to pay homage and familiarize with the Awka traditional stool.
Accompanied by management staff of the institution and members of the University Governing Council, Professor Esimone was received by Obi Nwosu alongside the President General of Awka Development Union Nigeria, Engineer Tony Okechukwu, all the traditional Chiefs, members of the Igwe’s Cabinet, Women groups, youths and all the stakeholders in Awka community.Addressing the gathering, Professor Esimone said according to the tradition of the school, every Vice Chancellor on assumption of office, pays a visit to the traditional ruler of Awka, to acquaint him of the peaceful transition.Professor Esimone who described Obi Nwosu as a father to all, thanked him for his advice which he said has led him far. Receiving the Vice Chancellor and his entourage, Obi Nwosu while presenting to him the key into Awka community, commended him for taking the right step and prayed God to guide him in taking the institution to a greater height.
The President General, Awka Development Union Nigeria, Engineer Tony Okechukwu while welcoming the group, said as the host community, youths of the town should be given special recognition in terms of admission, employment as well as contract, urging the new Vice Chancellor to always accommodate Ndi Awka.
In their separate speeches, the traditional Prime Minister of the community, Chief Ben Okoye and the Director, UNIZIK Business school, Professor A U Nonyelu, acknowledged that Awka is a peaceful community and will remain committed to the good of the institution, even as they requested for the inclusion of black smiting as a department in the school, to further improve the original occupation of Ndi Awka.
In his remarks, the Member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency, Mr. Chinedu Onwuaso and Mr. Peter Nnabuife respectively thanked all who gathered for the event and prayed for peace and harmony in Awka.The leader of non indigenes in Anambra state, Chief Amos Nkwuda said that they were happy with the development in Anambra promising to continue in the line of the existing peace.
