Resuscitation of the lower Anambra and Imo River Basin irrigation project will kick off in two months time.


The hint was dropped by Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Nnamdi Onukwuba during the Agriculture Transformation Agenda Support Program, ATASP Phase One steering committee zonal meeting.
Correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that the meeting was held at the ADP, Awka.
Commissioner Onukwuba explained that the meeting involves creating and increasing agricultural productivity in the zone, pointing out that the meeting enlightened them on the fact that tenders for the Lower Anambra and Imo basin irrigation project has been floated.


While emphasizing that Governor Willie Obiano is passionate about the project, the Commissioner continued that the meeting is important to ensure that enough security is provided for the people that would access the facility noting that the irrigation project, when fully functional, will aid rice production, three times annually.


The Zonal Coordinator of ATASP, Phase One, Mr Romanus Egba said that the meeting reviewed the progress and challenges of the program, to which their technical team will proffer solutions.


Mr Egba noted that they discussed about counterpart funding, irrigation, among other issues, adding that at the end of the meeting which he described as robust, different reports were given to them.
The Traditional Ruler of Omor, Igwe Chidume Oranu said that the irrigation will increase farm yield for a greater number of farmers, expressing optimism that with the unanimous move by stakeholders, the project would see the light of the day.


The Omor and Umueri axis of the irrigation project was built by the Japanese in the early eighties.
Stakeholders including Permanent Secretary in the Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture, among others, attended the meeting.
