World Humanitarian Day is held on Nineteenth August every year to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service as well as rally support for people affected by the crisis around the world.


International days are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resource to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.
The existence of International Days predates the establishment of the United Nations and serves as a powerful advocacy tool.


Correspondent, Njideka Okoye who gave an insight on the significant of the celebration, reports that this year’s World Humanitarian Day focuses on how to honour the work of women in crisis and unsung heroes throughout the world who have long been working on the front lines in their own communities and some most difficult terrains.
It also commended the efforts of women aid workers from across the world, who come together for people in need.


Contributing on the importance of the day, the Special Assistant to the Governor on media, Honorable Tony Nnezianya who said it is good to create awareness on the need to render humanitarian service, regretting that people no longer render humanitarian service to others due to complete change of value.


He recalled that before the civil war, people were taught how to render humanitarian service to anybody in need, mostly in elementary school as civic education.
Honnourable Nnezianya advocated going back to those values that promote humanitarian service, urging people to build relationship with humanity.


For the State Family Planning Coordinator, Mrs. Stella Ekweozor, women are soft hearted in nature hence the first to come to the aid of victims of crisis but regretted that they are not being appreciated.
Also speaking, the Chief Nursing Officer, UNTH Enugu, Mrs. Abigail Nwajuaku said that women make up a large number of those who risk their own lives to save others and urged world leaders as well as non-state actors to ensure that people involved in humanitarian service are assured of protection as ascribed under International Law.
