Over two hundred trees have been planted in Awka, the Anambra State capital as part of interventions to provide an ecosystem friendly environment .The exercise, under the 2019 tree planting campaign was organized by the Department of Forestry, Ministry of Environment.
Blessing Uchendu reports that while flagging off the event, Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano represented by the Head of Service, Barrister Harry Udu, said that the target of the present administration is to plant three million trees.


He said such was a solid prospect that demands the input of every Onye Anambra.
Governor Obiano however called on those who still engage in
deforestation to desist, noting that it is the major cause of the
present Global warming the whole world is experiencing.
Earlier in his address, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Obi
Nwankwo, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr
Emmanuel Okafor, said that its Ministry is focusing on the role of
trees in mitigating the negative effects of climate change and
ecological degradation.


In his remark, the Transition Committee Chairman, Awka South, Mr Leo
Nwuba, commended the Ministry for the tree planting campaign and
called on all and sundry to borrow a leave from what the Forest
Department has done, as a way of paying back to the environment.
Others who spoke to the ABS including the Zonal Coordinator South-
East Forestry, Professor Anthony Ibeh, Mr Vincent Okakpu and Mr
Anthony Odiegwu, pointed out that it’s an offence for one to cut trees
without replanting.


Planting of Teak tree also known as “Tectonia Grandis” by the state
Governor, the Commissioner for Works, Mr Marcel Ifejiofor and the
Traditional Ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu, among others, marked the
high point of the exercise.
