More groups, institutions and bodies are buying into the “Dobe Anambra Ocha” campaign of the Anambra state Ministry of Environment.
The most recent of the groups being students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and other residents around the campus.


The initiative which was kicked off by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Obi Nwankwo in June 2019, has its objectives as ensuring a cleaner Anambra, awakening the citizens’ consciousness of caring for their environment, maintaining proper refuse disposal with best practices and regular payment of sanitation fees.


The initiative tagged “Go clean Ifite Unizik” is a strategic intervention by the Anambra State Waste Management Authority, ASWAMA in collaboration with Student Union Government through the Ministry of Environment.
It seeks to clean up the students’ area to enhance proper hygiene that will ensure conducive learning environment and sensitize the students through practical examples.


Addressing the students, who came out in their numbers to participate in the clean up exercise, the Managing Director of ASWAMA, Mr. Amaechi Akaorah said that the choice of the area was necessitated by heaps of refuse often generated in the area with numerous hostels, other residential areas and recreation centers.


Mr Akaorah said that the partnership will continue with proper enforcement starting from Monday with twenty four hours monitoring of all liter points to ensure adequate waste disposal in the area.
The President, Student Union Government, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Comrade Joseph Okafor, said the collaboration was to see how best they will work together with the Anambra State Government to achieve a cleaner and conducive environment.


Contributing, the Vice President of the SUG UNIZIK Awka, Miss Cynthia Uwa and the Director of Environment of the SUG, Chiweike Okafor said that the Student Union had before now maintained regular partnership with African Clean Up Initiative and expressed the hope that through the stronger measures put in place, the issues of indiscriminate dumping of refuse and negligence of sanitation exercise in the area will soon be things of the past.
