A human rights activist and front line member of the Eighth Senate, Senator Shehu Sani, has warned that unless the Western and Eastern parts of Nigeria unite, getting power to shift to South in 2023 may become unrealisable.

Speaking at an interactive session with the FCT, Abuja Correspondents Chapel of NUJ, Senator Sani said as much as he supports the rotation of power, certain conditions must be met to achieve a power shift in 2023.
Ekwi Ajide of our Abuja bureau quotes the former law maker as saying that in a nation that has gone through the experiences of civil war, coup d’etat, ethnic and religious crises, it will be unfair for one part of the country to use their demographic advantage to hold on to power at the expense of others.

He cautioned that if the East and West continue to maintain their historical rivalry of Azikiwe and Awolowo, then the North will always retain the power.
The former Senator, also urged the federal government and security agencies to desist from attacking and preventing those who want to protest , stressing that such restraint from government would only compel Nigerians who are desirous of engaging in peaceful and legal protest to resort to violence.

Senator Sani said in order to protect the nation’s democracy, the government should respect the rule of law and fundamental human rights adding that the best legacy President Muhammad Buhari can bequeath to Nigerians is to uphold the rule of law and fundamental rights of citizens.
