In response to early warning intervention signals as well as commitment to the security of life and property of Ndi Anambra living in the riverine areas, Governor Willie Obiano has visited the areas for an on-the-spot inspection and possibly scale up of interventions in case of flooding.
Ferried on a boat from Onitsha Marine, the Governor who was accompanied by top government functionaries including some members of Anambra State Emergency Management Agency SEMA, among others, visited Otuocha, Ogbaru and other riverine areas.
The Governor said that the visit was to get first-hand knowledge of the situation, to be able to make informed decision.
Governor Obiano explained that if the flood happens, the economy of the state will be adversely affected, particularly people living in flood prone areas , even as he expressed optimism that the flood will not be as disastrous as the previous ones.
The Governor added that having inspected the twenty eight holding centres across the State, Anambra State government is ready for eventualities emanating from flood.
At Umuoba Anam Secondary School, where he was received by Traditional rulers in the area as well as community members, Governor Obiano who encouraged people living in the flood-prone areas to move to higher ground, just for the remaining one month of anticipated rainfall, commended the readiness of the Nigerian Navy, vigilante groups , the police and other security agencies and the level of co-operation among community members in providing information, asking them to continue.
It would be recalled that following predictions from relevant agencies in Nigeria on imminent flood disaster, the State Emergency Management Agency had advised people living in the riverine areas of the State to be on the alert and get ready to relocate to established holding centres once they noticed rise in water level within their communities.
