A four-year-old master Chinemeze Obiefuna, from Ayigo Village, Umurum, in Ayamelum council area of Anambra state, born with cleft lip has undergone a free corrective surgery at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.


The treatment, which is carried out on children with cleft lips and pallet is courtesy of a partnership between Caring Family Enhancement Initiative, CAFE; the NGO of Anambra state governor’s wife, Dr. Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano and Smile Train Incorporated, a New York based NGO that provides free treatments and surgeries for children with cleft lips and pallet across eighty-seven countries of the world.


As Mrs. Angela Obiefuna held her child in the peace of her bosom, she wore a smile and expressed happiness that her four years son with a lip deformity would look better.


The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly and Member Representing Anyamelum Constituency, Right Honourable Uchenna Okafor, who mobilized the child was also at the hospital and said he felt a sense of responsibility to play a part in what Dr. Mrs. Obiano and Smile Train are doing, and appealed to those with the resources to seek a fulfilled life by touching the people around them. Nkeiruka Obi, said the partnership with CAFE and trained surgeons at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, has given a stronger action against the deformity among children and said the organization was focused on eliminating the social challenges.


Also speaking, the surgeon, who led the treatment of Master Chinemeze Obiefuna, Dr Titus Chukwuanukwu, said even though it was a complex surgical activity, the result was satisfactory.


Smile Train is the world’s largest cleft lip charity with over one-point-five-million surgeries across ninety countries, in which over two hundred and fifty children have been treated so far since it came into Anambra State ten years ago.
