Today is International Literacy Day, a day set aside every year across the globe to promote and support the development of literacy and skills and universal access to quality education and learning opportunities through people’s lives.


It was originally established by UNESCO in nineteen sixty five, not just to combat literacy but also to promote literacy as a tool that could empower individuals as well as whole community.


Our education correspondent, who interviewed a cross section of the people on the importance of the day reports that as the world celebrate International literacy day, which has it theme as “Literacy and Multilingualism“, stakeholders and individuals of various climes advocate creating more avenues that will focus on the linguistic diversity in education and literacy development to overcome the challenges and achieve sustainable development goals.


Speaking on the development, Mrs. Chinyere Mbakwe, Special Assistant to the Governor on Secondary Education Monitoring, said all hands should be on deck, to eradicate illiteracy.


In her reaction , the Chairman, Post Primary School Service Commission, PPSSC, Lady Ify Okaro, said training and retraining of teachers will contribute maximally to reorientate the teaming masses.


She harped on consolidating on the development of more adult schools to help those who were not opportuned to go to school at their early stage.


In their separate reactions, an Educationist, Dr, Tobechukwu Nwamara, a Public Relations Officer Federal college of Education Technical Umunze, Mr.
Sam Otii, a lecturer Federal college of Education Technical Umunze, Dr Chike Obienyem, illiterate society do not promote development.


They however opined that no amount of education will be too much for a nation, instead, it will empower individuals towards sustainable development goals.
