The State House of Assembly has urged the Federal Government to rise to the challenge of protecting lives of Nigerians in the Diaspora and ensure that Nigerians whose businesses were looted and properties vandalized are adequately compensated by the South African Government.
The House also condemned in its entirety, the xenophobic attacks, gruesome murder and wanton destruction of businesses and property belonging to Nigerians in South Africa.
These were the resolutions passed by the House following a motion sponsored to that effect by the member representing Njikoka One Constituency, Dr. Timothy Ifedioramma and twenty-nine others during yesterdays plenary.
Moving the motion, Dr. Ifediramma lamented that businesses owned by Nigerians mostly resident in Johannesburg, Jeppestan, Durban and other parts of South Africa in recent past were subjected to gruesome attacks resulting to the loss of lives and valuable properties as well as rendering over five thousand persons displaced. UP SOT On his part, the chairman, House Committee on Diaspora matters, Honourable Emma Nwafor, who described the act as barbaric and tantamount to genocide called on the United Nations to sanction South Africa to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Deputy Speaker, Dr. Paschal Agbodike, the Chairman House Committee on Information and Culture, Honourable Okechukwu Okoye, member representing Njikoka Two Constituency, Dr. Pete Ibida and his Anambra East counterpart, Chief Obinna Emeneka, while urging the Federal Government and the International community to ensure that the perpetrators of the nefarious acts are punished accordingly, commended Chief Ellen Onyema for releasing his aircraft for the evacuation of Nigerians in South Africa who are willing to return home.
Others who lent their voices to the motion are Honourable Charles Obimma representing Oyi Constituency, member Aguata One Constituency, Dr. Cater Umeh, and member representing Orumba North Constituency, Chief Emeka Aforka.
The Speaker, Honourable Uche Okafor, on his part, condemned the attacks on Nigerians by South Africans.
On a matter of urgent public importance, the House passed a resolution urging Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioner for Environment and other relevant agencies to the erosion menace at Abacha-Oraukwu-road which had caved in buildings.
The motion to that effect was sponsored by Honourable Ifeanyi Chiekwu representing Idemili North Constituency.
Also at plenary, the Chairman, House Committee on Information and Culture, Honourable Okechukwu Okoye presented the report of the committee on a bill for a law to establish the Anambra State Information Communication Technology Agency to the House as a working document.
