Character failure is said to have no professional boundaries, as it cuts across all human endeavours and is the root cause of all crimes and violence in the society
These were the consensus opinion of stakeholders at a Character summit held in Abuja.
Various speakers at the summit tagged “Overcoming Corruption”, harped on the importance of character moulding from the family.
According to the first female Presidential Aspirant in Nigeria, Dr.
Sarah Jibril, Nigeria is teachable, changeable, developable and transformable if the citizens believe in themselves, have respect for others, are accountable and are ready to learn.
She noted that ethics is one of the major preventive measures to corruption describing parents as the Chief growers of conscience.
Dr. Jibril, however identified family, religion, education, politics, economy, media, entertainment and culture as the factors militating against character and good governance.
On his part, the National Chairman, “We The Good People Of Nigeria party”, and Chairman on the occasion, Professor Peter Nwangwu asserted that psychological insecurity is the reason for corruption in Nigeria, adding that all forms of corruption originates from psychological insecurity which is occasioned by non value based education.
According to him, education in Nigeria can be a tool for unifying the country’s diverse tribes, cultures, values and traditions as he said that character moulding is pivotal to changing the narrative just as he opined that a lifetime void of corruption is possible in Nigeria.
Other speakers including the National Chairman of Justice Must Prevail Party, Dr. Olusegun Ijagbemi, a panel of discussants moderated by Pastor Godwin Ekpo, and the convener of the summit, Dr Victor Osadolor, blamed parents for contributing to the increasing rate of corruption in Nigeria as they give in to the whims and caprices of their children.
The panel called on the citizenry to work towards the integration of the country and adhere to the rules and regulations of their profession or office.
