In order to check flood and reinforce the concrete retaining wall at
the confluence of Idemili river and Sakamori canal, Governor Willie
Obiano paid a visit to the site to access things for himself.

Sakamori river is in Odekpe, Ogbaru council area of the State.

Government house correspondent, Ejike Abana was also there and reports that Governor Obiano said that enquiry embarked upon by the State
government revealed that a permanent solution to flood in the area is
to dredge the confluence and create a path to enable free flow of
Idemili river into the River Niger.

While pointing out that about two hundred houses in the area are
usually affected by flood during high rainy season, he expressed
optimism that the move will help reduce flood in the area including
Okpoko, Onitsha and even Odekpe axis, cautioning the state citizenry
against throwing garbage in the water channels  as part of the problem is
years of accumulated garbage thrown into drainage system.

The contractor, handling the project, Mr. John Arachie who assured
that the project will be completed in four months time, hinted that
the high current of the Idemili river does not allow the sakamori
water to flow and empty appropriately into the River Niger, adding
that the project spans about four point two kilometers, while the
drainage is about ten meters deep.

The Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor, among others
visited the site with the Governor.

The Sakamori drainage is a federal government project constructed
years ago to check flood in the area, but eventually did not live up
to expectation.
Governor Obiano also inspected the completed work at the flood channel
from Nise-Amawbia-Nibo Road by Governor’s Lodge, which was awarded
about four months ago.

There, the Governor said that the bridge will be reconstructed, adding
that the access road will be done.

Recall that during last year flood, a Peugeot vehicle upturned from
the bridge into the water where one life was lost.

This prompted the Governor’s intervention.
