Sexual Assaults Referral Centre has been commissioned in Anambra
State, to this effect People who commit all forms of sexual assaults
are in for a hard time.
The Centre which was otherwise called ” Ntasi Centre” was donated by
the European Union Rule of Law and Anti Corruption (ROLAC) programme
and it is located at the Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital, Njikoka Local
Government Area.
Health Correspondent Chibuzor Okoye attended the event and reports that while
commissioning the centre, Governor Obiano represented by the
Commissioner for Health Anambra State, Dr. Vincent Okpala thanked
(ROLAC) for their numerous interventions in the state in terms of
restoring fundamental human rights and giving succour to victims of
sexual assaults.
Governor Obiano who noted that sexual assault can live a life long
physical, emotional and psychological trauma on the victims, explained
that his administration has provided a legal framework to deal with
the perpetrators of the menace and promised that government will
provide all the necessary facilities to keep the centre functional for
efficient service delivery.
The National Programme Manager (ROLAC) Dr. Danladi Plank who disclosed
that the programme started in 2017, revealed that they are working in
four cardinal areas which include, criminal justice reform, access to
justice for women, children and persons with disabilities, anti
corruption, as well as engagement with civil society groups and the
general public and thanked Ndi Anambra for the support they have been
giving the programme.
Dr. Danladi further disclosed that one in every four girls are being
sexually abused before the age of eighteen years, while their male
statistics is one in every ten boys and called on victims of sexual
assault to speak up, as succor has come for them. UPSOT
According to the Acting Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice
Anyachebelu, represented by the Deputy Chief Registrar, inspectorate,
Mrs. Vivian Udodike, the judiciary will give (ROLAC) all the necessary
support for them to achieve their aims and objectives in Anambra
State.
Goodwill messages came from the Commissioner for Women and Children
Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, his Tertiary and Science Education
Counterpart, Professor Theresa Obikeze, the Nigerian Police among
others.
