A case has been made for concerted efforts in the fight against sexual
and gender based violence.


The case was made during a one day Anambra State Peace stakeholders
consultative forum on gender based violence with the theme “Increase
in Gender Based Violence, a threat to Nations peace” organized by
Kingsfaith Development and Youth Empowerment Initiative in Awka,.

Baring his mind on the issue in the country, the Commissioner for
Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C-Don Adinuba, who was
represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on
Broadcasting, Mrs. Ify Aronu-Okafor, said that violence against women
is not limited to Africa or Nigeria alone but a worldwide issue and
attributed such to indiscipline and intolerance between men and women,
expressing believe that the workshop will go a long way in addressing
the Issue.


Mr. Adinuba further said that silence to issues affecting women as
embedded in the culture if some communities  is one of the major causes of violence and abuse against women.


Contributing, the Assistant Director and Head, Social Justice Unit,
National Orientation Agency, Barrister Ifeoma Chijioke and the Senior
Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Mobilization, Mr. Ugonna
Emechebe, called for gazetting of all relevant laws against violence
to strengthen the legal framework to prosecute offenders, urging the
police and other security agencies to give gender based violence the
attention it deserves. 


Others who spoke to the ABS, including the Director Anambra State
Library Services, Dr Nkechi Udeze and Publicity Secretary, Joint
National Association of Persons with Disability, Mr. Ifeanyichukwu
Igwegbe, pointed out that sexual and gender based violence can lead to
emotional, psychological and physical trauma that often times lead to
death.


The anchor of the program and Director, Kingsfaith Development and
Youth Empowerment Initiative, Mr. Kingsley Chukwurah called for all
hands to be on deck in combating the ugly trend advising those whose
rights and privileges have been trampled upon, to seek legal redress.
