The State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioners for Works, Environment and Housing to rehabilitate the collapsed section of the drains at Nkisi-Aroli street Inland Town, Onitsha.
House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that the resolution was sequel to the motion sponsored as a matter of urgent public importance by the member representing Onitsha North One Constituency, Hon. Douglas Egbuna during plenary in Awka.
Moving the motion, Honourable Egbuna blamed the collapsed building to the rechanneling of water from the drains to the base of the collapsed building and other buildings close to it.
He however commended the state government and the State Police Command for the swift response to cordon the premises of the collapsed building as well as asking landlords and tenants of nearby buildings to evacuate the affected area to avert any further casualties.
The Lawmaker urged the Executive Arm of Government to make arrangements for those who have been displaced as a result of the emergency and commence immediate assessment and repairs on the area and section of the road that were badly damaged.
Speaker of the House, Honourable Uche Okafor, who described the incident as very pathetic, sympathized with those that were affected by the collapsed and read out the resolution of the House, while members supported it through a voice vote.
