With the recurring economic uncertainties in Nigeria and most developing nations, expert says only effective public procurement can eliminate waste and increase value for money.


A former Director General, Bureau For Public Procurement, Engineer Emeka Eze made this known during a One day Interactive Seminar on Public Procurement, Tendering Processing And Effective Contract Pricing, Organized by the Anambra State Government, for her key government officials, at Golden Tulip Hotel, Agulu.


Delivering a lecture on general public procurement principles and objectives, as well as Anambra State Procurement Law, Engineer Eze noted that the overall objectives of the procurement law is to establish appropriate system of procurement within a legal framework, based on transparency, competition and objective criteria in decision making, that are effective in delivering value for money and prevention of corruption.


Engineer Eze made it clear that thirty states have already adopted the law in Nigeria, but its implementation remains one of the greatest challenges facing it, and stressed the need for Anambra State government to always abide by the law in all its activities.


He pointed out that public procurement has remained a strategic tool for the delivery of public goods to the masses, and revealed that violators of public procurement law can be severely dealt with as stipulated by law.
The Anambra State Head of Service, Barrister Harry Udu said that though, the state has been observing public procurement law, the seminar has widened their scope of knowledge about the dynamics of the law, which he said will further enhance their jobs and increase efficiency in the system.
In their various remarks, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C.Don Adinuba and his Health Counterpart, Dr.
Vincent Okpala, described the training as apt and timely, adding that it is an attestation that the current state government is desirous of increasing value for money, eliminate waste and raise the tempo of socio-economic development of Anambra State.


Some of the dignitaries at the event were, the Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor, Commissioner for Tertiary and Science Education, Professor. Theresa Obiekezie, her Basic Education Counterpart, Professor. Kate Omenugha and that of Lands, Mr. Bonaventure Enemali.


Others were the Commissioner For Youth Empowerment and Creative Economy, Mr. Afam Mbanefo, the Commissioner For Transport, Dr.
Christian Mmadubuko, that of Trade and Commerce, Mr. Uchenna Okafor, Chieftaincy and Town Union Matters, Mr. Greg Obi and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Disability Matters, Barrister Chuks Ezewuzie among numerous others.
