Anambra state government has re-echoed the need for all to key into the campaign of tree planting to reduce ecological challenges facing the state.


Our correspondent sampled the opinions of stakeholders in the environment sector towards total compliance by Ndi Anambra and reports that based on the ecological problems facing Anambra state, despite its small land mass , the present administration has shown strong determination in controlling man made and natural threats to the environment, top of which is the partnership with Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project and flagging off of tree planting campaign among others.


Speaking on some of the major steps taken by the state Ministry of Environment to ensure a healthy environment for the residents, the Head of Forestry Department in the Ministry, Mr. Vincent Okeakpu said that the idea of tree planting campaign is to awaken the consciousness of the people to reclaim the lost land mass from erosion.


He disclosed that the ministry has commenced tree planting program in various forest reserved areas across the state ,noting that they equally monitor felling of trees to ensure that defaulters plant two as replacement.
Also speaking, the Transition Committee chairman, Awka South council area, Mr. Leo Nwuba, who commended the state government’s initiatives in the environment sector, assured that before the end of the year, more than five hundred trees will be planted in his locality.


While emphasizing the importance of tree planting, the Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Venerable Amechi Okwuosa said the agency came up with a strategic plan to ensuring that all buildings plant at least, two trees to achieve aesthetic beauty in the state,
