Officials of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, have
demolished illegal structures and shanties blocking waterways at Dike
street, Obinagu and Court roads all in Awka South council area.
The team led by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of
the Agency, Venerable Amechi Okwuosa decried the untold hardship
caused by such practice to people in the environment as it brings
heavy flooding to the areas.
While demolishing and evacuating the debris from the water channels, Venerable Okwuosa said that there is need to tackle the re-occurrence of flooding in the state capital territory.
He said that one major cause of flooding in the city is blocked drains
and building across water channels.
Venerable Okwuosa, who advised the state citizenry to always seek
necessary approvals before erecting any structure to avoid waste of
funds, warnin that it is illegal to dump refuse into the drains or
build across water ways.
Applauding the agency for a work well-done, the Senior Special
Assistant to the Governor on Political Matters, Honourable Onyeka
Mbaso said that the measure taken by the agency is long overdue
considering the high propensity the state capital has over flooding,
believing that this holistic approach will remedy the flooding
situation in the state and prevent the roads from deterioration.
A Resident Pastor Abiodun Adekola thanked the state government for
its tireless efforts in restoring free flow of water but frowned
at developers, who do not consider the drainages while erecting their
structures.
