Amawbia Communityy in Awka South Local Government Area has celebrated its 2019 iwa ji festival.


The event, held at Ugbogiliga Event Centre New Era Amawbia, attracted the six villages, Age grade groups, community leaders, Ndi Nze na Ozo, women groups, friends of the town, traditional rulers including the traditional ruler of Owelle Kingdom, Igwe Anthony Onyekwere and his Ezira counterpart, Igwe Samuel Uche.


Other dignitaries present were the Commissioner for Environment, Mr.
Obi Nwankwo and a former Dean Faculty of Law, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Onyi Oguno.
Correspondent, Valentine Mbadugha reports that new yam festival is an ancient Igbo culture, celebrated at a particular season across the entire Igbo land.


The festival is also an opportunity to thank God for the life of farmers, the indigenes and for bountiful harvest.


Breaking the kolanut, the Regent of Amawbia, Ozo Nnaemeka Maduka, who Thanked God for a successful farming season and good harvest, prayed for a better harvest next year.


In their separate remarks, some cabinet members including, Nze Ifeanyi Okonkwo and Ozo Mike Akubude while praying for sustainable peace, unity and progress of their town, expressed hope that next year’s new yam festival will be celebrated in a bigger way.


On his part, the member representing Awka South Constituency Two in the State House of Assembly, Mr. Chukwuma Okoye enjoined Ndi Anambra to always identify with Igbo culture and tradition for posterity.


In their goodwill massages, the President General, Amawbia Town Union, Mr. Ebele Nwufo and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Anambra Broadcasting Service and a cabinet Chief at Enugwu-ukwu, Chief Uche Nworah, assured that they will continue to promote Igbo culture which they described as one of the driving agenda of the Obiano administration.


The event featured, masquerades display, cultural dances, handing of new yam to all the six villages of the town among others.
