The Anambra State Waste Management Authority ASWAMA is extend gate to gate pick up of waste to more areas in Awka and environs.


Speaking in Awka the Managing Director o the Agency Mr. Amechi Akora said this was part of measures to eliminate public dumping of waste.
Paul Ezeoke reports that  Mr.  Akora disclosed that already Governor Willie Obiano has ordered six more trucks for the Agency which will be delivered by the second week of this month to further facilitate effective waste management.


He explained that the gate to gate pick up of waste exercise would cover the entire span of Government House, starting from Umuchi Street to the junction with Best Western meloch road to the back of Aquinas church and right hand axis of the corridors to commissioners quarters.


The ASWAMA boss Akora explained that the Agency has already commenced the exercise at Ngozika and Udoka estates and would extend it to Rockland Estate while it has equally engaged in bi-monthly sanitation reach out through which the Agency could reach to villages in Awka every mid-month for sanitation exercise in their areas in collaboration with the women wing of the town union.


He said the Agency is also collaborating with a nongovernmental organization “African Cleanup Initiative” as well as the Students Union of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and will engage the students union of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University as part of measures to encourage the younger generation to get actively involved in waste management.


According to Mr. Akora Waste Management  is a collective responsibility as the environment is vital to healthy living and called for mobile sanitation court to effectively enforce sanitation laws.


Also speaking, the state Assistant coordinator of the nongovernmental organization, Mr. Orjiakor Ogbo said the organization has continued to mobilize students and other youths to contribute to environmental activities, noting that the environment directly impact on lives of people and urged youths to take full ownership of their environment and protect it from abuse.
