Nine hundred and twenty schools have been closed down across Mali following a conflict which resulted in the killings of at least twenty-five soldiers and sixty more missing, thereby robbing displaced
children the opportunity of schooling.

According to a report, children attending a first day of class in Segou will later be joined by displaced youngsters in their town once resources are ready, while more than two-thirds of the nine hundred
and twenty schools are in the three central regions of the country
Mopti, Segou and Koulikoro.

It was gathered that one school in three has been shut down in the Mopti region, which is most affected by raids from jihadists loyal to ethnic Fulani or Peul preacher Amadou Koufa which prompted retaliatory violence by self-proclaimed community defence militias.

At the local education authority in Segou, Regional Director, Itous Ag Ahmed Iknan, said he was informed of the dramatic events in the village of Souba insisting that the army has to come back, so that the zone can be secured, otherwise the schools will not re-open.
