The rich culture of Obosi kingdom was brought to the fore as the sons and daughters of Obosi gathered to celebrate the 2019 annual Obiora festival to mark the beginning of the new yam harvest with their traditional ruler, Igwe Chidubem Iweka.
The event, held at Afor Adike square Obosi, was heralded with a cultural carnival by Obosi youths who moved round the major streets in the community, displaying the richness of the sociocultural heritage of Ndi Obosi.
According to the traditional ruler of Obosi, Igwe Iweka III, Obiora festival is not just to celebrate the new yam, but it also designates a period for the observance of peace.
The royal father of Obosi explained that the ancestors of Obosi deemed it necessary to adjoin the new yam festival with the observance of peace and harmony, love and brotherhood, hence their law which prohibits fighting and quarrelling in the Obiora period.
He further stated that 2019 Obiora Obosi was ushered in with a carnival culture of the Caribbean’s, Trinidad and Tobego to display processions that enact the diverse tenets of Obosi lifestyle.
The state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano who graced the occasion commended the cultural heritage of Obosi kingdom and urgedthe people of the community to support their monarch in building the
community and called on criminal elements in the state to desist from
crime.
Earlier in a welcome address, the President General of Obosi
Development Union, Engineer Ike Okolo noted that Obiora Obosi is an ancient tradition that reminds the people of the values placed on peaceful co-existence and oneness.
In their separate comments, the traditional Prime Minister of Obosi,
Chief Collins Anibogwu, the Head of Uruowulu village, Chief Godwin
Osakwe, the Chairman Nigerian Medical Association, Anambra state
chapter Dr. Ndudi Muonago and the President, Otu Enyinwanyi Obosi Dr.
Mrs Vivian Onwuekwe lauded Igwe Obosi forincreasing the tempo of the Obiora Obosi which she said has attracted
international tourists.
Ikpo Onunu, Ekwe dance by the Cabinet Chiefs, recognition of Ada Obosi, who is a Federal Minister of state for Environment, Barrister Sharon Ikeazor and Chieftaincy installations on Senator Uche Ekwunife
and others, including homages to Igwe Obosi also featured at the event.
