Anambra state Government has embarked on road decongestion exercise
and removal of shops built on water channels along major roads in the
commercial city of Onitsha and its environs.

The state Commissioner for Transport, Dr Christian Madubuko in company
of Anambra state Traffic Agency, ASTA, visited Ogbaru main market, Okpoko where long vehicles off loading goods were impounded and taken to the newly constructed Urban Terminal One, General Motor Park along Obodoukwu road Okpoko.

At Owerri Road by pass, Ezeiweka Junction and some portions of upper
Iweka road axis, the traders were warned to remove their shops and goods displayed on the drainages along the road, and reminded  that the law banning street trading in the state is still in force

The Commissioner who noted that his Ministry will not relent at implementing State Government’s directives aimed at ensuring orderliness and free flow of traffic on major roads of the State,
frowned at the indiscriminate sitting of illegal motor parks and display of goods by traders along major roads as well as building shops on top of water channels and charged the traders to desist
forthwith or face the full weight of the law.

On his part, the developer of the urban terminal park, Mr Charles Ezeani said the general park was built in partnership with the State Government under private public partnership with the intention to enhance free flow of  traffic, curb insecurity around Upper Iweka as well as help attract investors into the State.

Mr Ezeani while enumerating most of the facilities put in place at the park regretted that most motorists have refused to make use of the General Park and urged  them to comply with the directive.

In his reaction, one of the alleged illegal park user, Mr Cajethan Umeoha commended the effort of the State Government towards sanitising the State but appealed to the government to allow them use these parks as they were nearer to their shops in the market for easy off loading of their goods.
