The Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology has canvassed
for the setting up of Anambra State Food Safety Commission to regulate
the quality and processing of foods across the State.

The call was made during a courtesy call  on  the traditional ruler of
Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu, in his Palace.

Correspondent Blessing Uchendu  reports that
the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology, founded in
1976, is a non-profit making body for food professionals drawn from
the Academia, Industry, Government and Research Institutes in Nigeria.

The President of the Institute and its Council Chairman, Mr Toye
Oluwole disclosed that a bill has been passed by the National Assembly
for the body to oversee activities of professional food scientists and
food safety in Nigeria and stressed the need for the State House of
Assembly to adopt it since agriculture remains the key developmental
pillar in Anambra State.

Mr Oluwole said the visit was to intimate the South-East and State
residents of their National Conference and General Meeting commencing
today at Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Center.

One of the Vice Presidents of the Association, Professor Abu Oneh,
said the association is paramount in tackling some of the irrational
fear in consuming locally made products.

In their separate speeches, the Chairman East Central Chapter,
Professor Gabriel Okafor and the Local Organizing Committee Chairman
of the conference, Professor Earnest Igwe, thanked Obi Nwosu for the
warm reception accorded them and called on all especially the street
food sellers to ensure that they consume hygienic foods at all times
to promote good health and reduce avoidable sicknesses.
Welcoming  the delegates, Obi Nwosu, commended the association for
choosing Anambra State as the venue for their National Conference and
expressed the hope that through the Conference, the masses will be
better educated on things they should do to ensure food safety,
thereby buying their health with their food.

He later presented a plaque to them and prayed for God’s guidance
throughout their stay in Anambra State.
