The Investigative Panel of Inquiry into the Umueri Communal Crisis has
advised all parties involved in the matter to be honest and sincere in
their submissions.
At the commencement of the proceedings, the Chairman of the panel,
Retired Justice Chinyelu Anigbogu who thanked the community members
for their positive attitude towards members of the panel, since it
commenced sitting and warned that the panel has the right, under the
tribunals of inquiry law, to punish for contempt, any disobedience,
insolence and unruly behaviours.
Justice Anigbogu noted that the Panel has not come to judge or
pronounce sentence to anybody, rather, its duty is to find out facts
and causes of actions, as well as things that government will rely on
to find a lasting solution to the crisis rocking the community.
The traditional ruler of Umueri, Igwe Benneth Emeka while re-assuring
the panel of his commitment towards ensuring that lasting peace
returns to the community, appealed to the people of the area who are
still spreading rumours through conventional and social media
platforms, to desist forthwith for peace to reign.
