Anambra State government says it has mobilized contractors back to site for the commencement of work on various dilapidated roads to alleviate the sufferings of the people.


The Commissioner for Works, Mr Marcel Ifejiofor disclosed this while defending the 2020 budget of his Ministry before the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Appropriation in Awka.


House of Assembly correspondent Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that Mr Ifejiofor told the committee that construction firms are now working on various dilapidated roads in Anambra West, East, Onitsha North and Onitsha South Constituencies while dilapidated roads in other parts of the State will be fixed before the end of the year.


He explained that the sum of fourteen billion naira allocated to the Ministry in the 2020 appropriation bill is for road construction, rehabilitation and completion and appealed to the committee to increase the budgetary allocation to works in view of the magnitude of construction works to be done.


He further stated that six billion naira was budgeted for Umueri City Cargo Airport in line with the promise of the State Government to deliver to Ndi Anambra a befitting airport.


On his part, the Chairman, House Committee on Works, Dr. Timothy Ifediromma commended the efforts being made by the Executive Arm of Government to fix failed roads in the state and charged the Ministry of works to justify funds allocated to it as his committee will oversight them at the right time to see how they expended it.


In their remarks, some members of the Appropriation Committee, including Dr. Carter Umeh, the Deputy Chairman, Mr Nonso Okafor, Mrs Beverly Ikpeazu Nkemdiche and Mr Patrick Udeoba also praised the Ministry of works for mobilizing contractors back to site.


The Ministry of Environment and Anambra State Bureau of Statistics also appeared before the committee and defended their budget estimates.


Speaking to journalists after the exercise, the Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Chief Obinna Emeneka stated that budget defence of the Ministries of Works, Environment and Anambra State Bureau of Statistics was satisfactory.
